Have you ever wondered why the world is the way it is? This subject will look at the geographical, historical and social factors that have changed our society. Together, we will explore the more recent events that have shaped our everyday lives, including:

  • The Australian Gold Rush

  • Identity and citizenship

  • The geographies of human well-being and happiness

  • Vikings!

  • Business and economics

  • Wars and revolutions

  • Crime and punishment

This subject will allow students to explore History, Geography, Economics, Civics and Citizenship across a range of topics and through various activities. There might also be the opportunity for an excursion or two! In 2023 we visited Sovereign Hill and are planning a trip to the Old Melbourne Gaol.

FLE Humanities will also cover some of the content from previous Humanities electives ‘Crime and Punishment’ and ‘Rights and Freedoms’. This content may include:

Students will have an influence over what we study in each semester, and will have the option to focus on an area of interest exclusive to them if they don’t find certain topics riveting.

We will focus on developing skills through a variety of tasks including:

  • Creating your own NGO (non-government organisation)

  • Researching what makes a country ‘happy’

  • Creative tasks

  • Research reports into national identity

  • Starting your own business

This subject can lead into a range of electives, Pre-VCE and VCE classes, but is also an opportunity to learn some interesting stuff across a range of disciplines!

Student Testimonials

I would say that humanities helps you get a better understanding of the world around you and its history. I really enjoy learning about different points in history – Dara (FLE1)

Students have more control over what they do and there is a lot of fun things to do that make the learning we do interesting such as the news log and we watch 'The World This Week'. The learning tasks are also fun. - Anna (FLE1)
