Permaculture: Farm and Garden
Do you enjoy working outdoors, getting your hands dirty and learning how things grow? Then Permaculture: Farm & Garden could be the subject for you! In this hands-on and creative subject, you’ll explore how to care for land, grow food and make the most of what we have around us.
Our classes are an exciting blend of maintenance, design and theory.
In our maintenance lessons, you’ll take part in real, hands-on jobs that keep the school farm running, such as:
planting seeds and seedlings
mulching garden beds
weeding and keeping paths tidy
harvesting fruit and vegetables
propagating plants from cuttings or seeds
cooking and preserving food from the garden (often in our Pizza Oven!)
In our design lessons, you’ll use creativity and problem-solving skills to:
design seasonal garden plots with crops that grow well at different times of year
plan and build garden structures using salvaged or recycled materials
repair tools like shovels, axes, splitters—or even tools you bring from home
These lessons are all about thinking like a designer and making practical improvements to help the garden and farm thrive.
In our theory lessons, you’ll learn about the important things that help a garden or farm succeed, including:
how the seasons affect planting and harvesting
what makes soil healthy and how to improve it
how to make and use compost
safe ways to manage weeds and pests
the basics of plant and animal biology
how tools and infrastructure help a farm run smoothly.
You’ll also explore different careers in agriculture and how people work with land and animals in real jobs.
Permaculture: Farm & Garden is perfect for students who enjoy learning by doing, working with others and being outdoors. You’ll build confidence, learn useful life skills, and see the real results of your work on the school farm.
Permaculture is about sustainable living based on ecological principles. Growing your own food is a large part of permaculture, but it’s also about building with recycled and natural materials, energy efficiency, water capture and efficiency, and building local communities. Some fun ways for students to get involved with building our community are joining in our Learning Expo in Term 1, where we open our doors and show visitors around our awesome school. We also have a student-run Bush Dance, a large event with live music that gives students an opportunity to raise money by selling products from our garden. For those interested, we also have a Bee Club that cares for our school Bee Hives, making interesting products from the honey and beeswax produced.
Choose Permaculture: Farm & Garden if you want a fun, active, and meaningful subject where you learn how to care for the land and make a difference!
