Pre VCE Legal, Politics and Money
year long
Purpose
This year-long subject equips students with an introduction to Legal Studies, Australian and Global Politics, Business Management, and Accounting. It will draw on the year 10 Victorian Curriculum in the Civics and Citizenship and Business and Economics Learning Area.
Students will develop critical thinking, evaluation and reasoning skills with application to real-world issues, such as:
Parliament
Investing in the stock market
Criminal law
Jury system
Petitions, Demonstrations & Influencing change
How businesses create a competitive advantage
Election campaigns and voting
Financial management
Starting and maintaining a successful business
Intellectual property
Resolving legal disputes

Areas of Study
Legal Studies
Students will develop knowledge and understanding of Australia’s political system, with particular emphasis on the key features of Australia and Victoria’s legal systems. Students will learn about the parliamentary system, criminal law, human rights, intellectual property, and dispute resolution.
Learning Tasks: Mock Parliamentary Debate, How a Bill Becomes a Law Poster, Jury Fact Sheet, Mock Mediation and Dispute Resolution
Business Management and Financial Literacy
Students will explore several topics that relate directly to commercial situations in everyday life, including types of business ownership, structure, franchises, business plan development, marketing, location factors, ABN, and business name registration.

Australian and Global Politics
Students will also evaluate various factors that sustain democratic societies and critically compare them to other political structures. Students will learn about the influence of the media in politics, investigate a human rights issue, learn about how elections and voting work and look at methods that individuals can use to influence political change.
Learning Tasks: Mock Parliamentary Debate, Writing a Letter to an MP, Running your own election campaign
Accounting
Students will explore and investigate the basics of small business accounting (service and trading), with a focus on personal financial literacy and management. The course will also explore different types of investing and saving money.
