Step into the world of textiles and sustainable fashion!

This elective is perfect for students who are curious about fashion, creativity, sustainability, and hands-on making. Whether you're completely new to sewing or already love creating with fabric, this subject offers something for everyone.

Throughout the semester, you'll gain confidence using a sewing machine — from learning how to thread a machine to mastering basic stitching and safe machine handling. You’ll experiment with hand and machine techniques, explore pattern reading, and work through the design process of creating your very own wearable garment!

This elective also focuses on sustainable practices. You’ll discover how fashion impacts the planet and explore creative ways to reduce waste through upcycling, repairing and reimagining old clothing.

Alongside making, you’ll explore the rich history of fashion design, discover influential designers and movements, and reflect on how fashion tells stories about identity, culture and change.

In a Textiles & Sustainable Fashion elective, you will be encouraged to:

·         Develop Technical Skills: Learn to confidently use a sewing machine, read patterns, hand-stitch, and safely use a variety of tools and materials.

·         Think Sustainably: Understand the environmental impact of the fashion industry and explore creative ways to design with purpose through upcycling and reuse.

·         Design with Purpose: Create a garment or textile product from concept to completion, applying key design thinking techniques along the way.

·         Explore Fashion History: Gain insight into global fashion trends, historical periods, and iconic designers who have shaped what we wear today.

·         Foster Creativity & Self-Expression: Find your style, experiment with textiles, and bring your ideas to life through colour, pattern, shape and texture.

·         Build independence: Work through challenges, make mistakes, problem-solve, and grow your confidence in making and designing independently.

So, if you love fashion, want to learn valuable life skills and care about creativity with a conscience – this is the elective for you!
