Scrolls and Spells
Subject Overview
Scrolls and Spells is a mainstream English subject infused with the imaginative spirit of Dungeons and Dragons. While we won’t be playing the game in class, students will explore the same rich themes of character, identity, teamwork, problem solving, and storytelling through creative and analytical tasks. This subject challenges students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and collaboration skills in a fantasy-inspired context that’s both rigorous and rewarding.
Who is this subject for?
This subject is ideal for students who:
Enjoy fantasy and science fiction stories
Want to improve their writing and communication skills
Thrive in team-based learning environments
Are looking to boost their confidence in reading, analysis, and presenting ideas
Students look at the VCE and VCE VM pathways
What will students do?
Students will undertake a variety of tasks designed to extend both their creative and analytical thinking:
Create a character that reflects aspects of their own personality and values
Analyse and review a dramatic scene from a fantasy narrative
Design and pitch an original magical item through persuasive writing and speaking
Adapt an existing myth, fairytale, or folktale into a short fantasy adventure
Collaboratively design a fictional country as part of a shared world
Write creatively to contribute to a class anthology
What this subject is not
Scrolls and Spells is not a Dungeons and Dragons club. There are no gameplay sessions during class time. Instead, the subject draws on the narrative style and worldbuilding depth of D&D to engage students in meaningful and rigorous English learning. We do have a Dungeons and Dragons club that plays after school on Fridays. Please get in contact with Sam Barbera for more information if you are interested.
