Words 2: Literacy Support

Subject Overview

*Content Advisory: This subject contains in-depth study of films with a variety of mature subject matter. 

Year-long English support program for students who need extra help with reading, writing, and building confidence.

  • Builds on WORDS 1 but also open to new students ready for more mature texts. Check films chosen prior to selecting WORDS 2.

  • Not an Entry or Essential English subject.

Pathway to VM or VCE

  • Students are given time to learn key concepts and complete tasks.

  • Texts studied (films and novels) are accessible and engaging.

  • Essay writing skills are taught step-by-step with clear scaffolds.

  • Tasks are adapted to meet individual learning needs.

  • Strong focus on organisation skills — keeping exercise books neat with notes, drafts, and feedback.

  • Creativity and independence are encouraged, with opportunities for poetry and blackout poems in Semester Two.

  • Fostering pride in achievement — each student selects two pieces of their best work to be published in a WORDS 2 class booklet as a keepsake. Every student receives a copy as a memento of their year.

MATERIALS

  • Exercise book (organised for notetaking and drafting).

  • Pens and pencils.

  • A charged computer: OneNote + PowerPoint for student work.

  • Prepares students for essay writing, speaking, and responding to texts and imaginative themes, while building the independence and organisation skills needed for success in VM studies.
