Fashion & Textiles Elective

semester 1 & 2

Discover the exciting world of fashion, textiles and sustainable design! This hands-on elective is perfect for students who enjoy being creative, solving problems and making their ideas come to life. 

Students will learn to confidently use a sewing machine, develop hand and machine sewing techniques, read patterns, and create their own textile or fashion projects using the design process. Along the way, they will build practical making skills, confidence and independence. 

Students will also explore the environmental impact of the fashion industry and discover how sustainable practices, such as upcycling and repairing clothing, can reduce waste. They will investigate fashion history, influential designers and the ways fashion reflects culture, identity and innovation.

The TC Design Process guides students through five stages of purposeful, iterative design practice.

• Investigating & Defining – Define the problem, conduct research, and develop a design brief.

• Generating & Designing – Establish success criteria, generate design ideas, and justify the final solution.

• Planning – Prepare a materials/ingredients list and a project plan or procedure.

• Producing & Implementing – Demonstrate technical skills and maintain a process journal.

• Evaluating – Design and carry out testing, and suggest improvements.

This consistent five-stage process is applied across all year levels and subject areas within Technologies, giving students a shared design language and a structured approach to solving real-world problems.
