semester Long - Students can select this subject once per year, in either Semester 1 or Semester 2.

It is recommended that students undertake this at FLE3. 

In Pre VCE Media students will build on their skills and knowledge developed in Media Elective to work towards VCE Media or alternative Media Pathways. This subject will explore a range of media products and forms, develop media language and an understanding of the Media Production Process.

Students will build an understanding of how both media and audiences are influential and the impact they have on one another. Students will study and analyse existing media products in a range of media forms and genres and understand how they are constructed using codes and conventions. Students will develop their own personal style by creating their own media products and work through the media production process to plan, develop, create and distribute their own media products.

Media language will be developed throughout students written skills and ability to analyse media products to inform their own. Throughout Pre VCE Media, students are required to work both independently and collaboratively and undertake specific roles and responsibilities within the production process.


Semester 1 – Genre and Style   

Exploring the aesthetics of film directors and characteristics of genre. Projects may include: 

  • Film Production 

  • Magazines 

  • Film Analysis  

  • Photo Narrative 

  • Script Writing

semester 2 - understanding narrative

Explore how media creators manipulate codes and conventions to communicate meaning. Projects may include: 

  • Hybrid Media 

  • Print Publications 

  • Film Making  

  • Story Boarding 

  • Photo Narrative 

Along the way, you'll: 

  • Learn script writing, developing stories and narrative structure. 

  • Learn post-production editing techniques using professional software. 

  • Build skills in composition, layout and design in print media. 

  • Create manual and digital drawings to be used for animated projects. 

  • Explore the work of influential directors and photographers. 

  • Document your ideas, research and production process in a design folio. 

  • Build confidence using industry-standard design software and digital workflows. 

  • Develop the skills and knowledge needed for success in VCE Media 

Pre VCE Media is a diverse, dynamic and evolving collection of forms used to inform, entertain, communicate with and connect people. Pre VCE Media Studies encourages creative and analytical thinking, and teaches students to become critical consumers of media products.  

Please note: Students will need a device that supports the installation of Adobe Creative Cloud applications, such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. These applications are provided free of charge.
