Pre VCE Commerce

Semester long

Purpose

In Pre VCE Commerce, students will develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to make informed financial and business decisions. Through hands-on projects and real-world case studies, students will plan a holiday budget, compete in the ASX School Sharemarket Game, create and pitch their own business, and explore how businesses recruit, manage and motivate employees. This subject provides a lead-in to the VCE Business Management and VCE Accounting pathway, an engaging introduction to business, finance and the workplace while building valuable skills for future study and everyday life.  

Units of Work

Going on a Holiday: 

Students will utilise their knowledge of consumer decision-making and budgeting to plan a holiday. Students build upon their ability to make rationed financial choices in planning their trip.  

Investment Portfolios:  

Students to learn about the financial risks and rewards of investing, including how to make reasoned and smart financial decisions. Students will also participate in the ASX School Sharemarket Game and invest $50,000 whilst tracking their portfolio growth and investigating what makes a good investment. 

Competitive Advantage:

Students will investigate what gives a business a competitive advantage over its rivals, including an excursion to Preston Market. Students will learn about various marketing and management concepts before creating a business plan and pitching their own business. 

Human Resources Management:

Students will explore how businesses recruit, manage and motivate employees to build successful workplaces. They will take on the role of hiring managers by analysing job applications and recruitment processes while creating their own professional résumé. Students will also investigate the role of trade unions and employer groups, using real-world examples such as teacher strikes to examine workplace rights and conditions in Australia.
