Pre VCE Outdoor Education

Eligible year levels: FLE 3. It is strongly recommended that FLE 2 students who wish to take a Pre-VCE in the HPE space, complete the corresponding elective prior.

Subject Overview:

Outdoor Education FLE-Pre VCE can be taken as a Semester length or full-year. Students can engage with this subject as an elective or continue with the subject for one year in preparation for VCE.

Outdoor Education aims to introduce students to sustainable relationships between people and natural environment. Students would be involved in a range of outdoor activities and will be introduced to skills and techniques required for safe participation in the outdoors and general community, while developing an appreciation and understanding of the natural environment.

Key practical (hard skills) developed include:

  • Outdoor living skills

  • Pitching a tent

  • Cooking on a fire/stove

  • Tarpology

  • Hygiene outdoors

  • Navigation

  • Weather interpretation

  • Gear selection

  • Journey planning

  • Specific activity skills (dependent on outdoor experiences selected)

  • Physical fitness

  • Scientific knowledge of environmental connections

  • First aid

  • Sustainable practices

  • Environmental monitoring skills

  • Conservation skills
