FLE1 Mathematics

Year long

Students in this class will engage with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 at level 8. The curriculum is organised into 6 strands: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. Students continue to use the Maths Pathway platform that was introduced in Entry Maths. 

In FLE 1 Maths, students continue to build on their knowledge and skills, developing greater confidence and independence in their learning. The course focuses on strengthening problem-solving abilities, logical thinking, and the ability to apply mathematics in both familiar and new situations. 

Students extend their understanding of numbers by working with integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages, and by exploring how these can be used in real-life contexts. They develop fluency with calculations using mental strategies, written methods, and digital tools, and investigate patterns using powers (exponents). 

Algebra plays a key role, with students learning to simplify expressions, solve equations, and use graphs and tables to represent relationships. They apply these skills to model and solve practical problems involving ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning. 

In measurement and space, students explore concepts such as units and accuracy, circles (including circumference and area), and the important relationship described by Pythagoras’ theorem. They also investigate properties of shapes, including similarity and congruence, and use coordinates to describe objects in two and three dimensions. 

Students develop their understanding of statistics by collecting and analysing information and exploring how samples represent populations. Probability is explored through experiments and simulations. 

This course encourages students to become confident, capable mathematicians who can think critically and apply their skills to a wide range of real-world situations.
