FLE2 Mathematics

Year long

Students in this class will engage with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 at level 9. The curriculum is organised into 6 strands: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability.  

In FLE 2 Maths, students continue to strengthen their skills and confidence as independent learners, building on what they have learnt in previous years. The course focuses on developing deeper understanding, problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply mathematics in both everyday and more complex situations. 

Students expand their knowledge of numbers by working with the real number system, including fractions, decimals, and irrational numbers. They explore concepts such as scientific notation and investigate accuracy in measurement, including how errors can affect results. 

Algebra becomes more in depth, with students learning to work with linear and quadratic relationships. They use tables, graphs, and equations to model real-life situations, make predictions, and solve problems. Students also learn to simplify expressions, factorise simple quadratics, and solve a range of equations using different methods. 

In measurement and space, students explore surface area and volume, and apply their understanding of similarity, scale, and trigonometry to solve practical problems. They also use key theorems, such as Pythagoras’ theorem, to investigate and solve geometric challenges. 

Students develop their understanding of probability by exploring multi-step events and representing outcomes using diagrams and tables. In statistics, they analyse and compare data, look for patterns, and evaluate how information is presented. 

This course encourages students to think critically, justify their reasoning, and apply mathematical skills confidently in a wide range of real-world contexts.
